I'm running 100km in March as part of Cancer Council's The March Charge.
What compels an unfit, overweight, middle-aged bloke with a dodgy knee who's recovering from recent surgery to do this?
It's personal. You see, I lost my Dad to cancer. He was not much older than I am now. He went from being fit, fun-loving and apparently healthy to taking on the fight of his life. And he fought hard, inspiring a lot of us along the way. Each time the oncologist delivered another bit of bad news, Dad was spurred on to look for alternatives, to find reasons to hope, to explore new and sometimes quite out-there treatment opportunities. He kept doing that for four years, but eventually the evil prick of a disease proved too much.
Dad was a good guy. He always went out of his way to help others. He went through life truly wanting to do make the world a better place. And as much as I would give anything for Dad to still be here and any number of other less deserving people to have been taken instead, it's not what Dad would ever have wished for.
Compared to what Dad went through and to what an estimated 162,000 Australians who'll be diagnosed with cancer this year will go through, my dodgy knee and niggling aches and pains are nothing.
So I'm going to watch less Netflix, drink less beer and order less Uber Eats. I'm going to get off the couch and get into shape so I can knock over at least 100km (and all things going well, at a decent pace) over the 31 days of March.
I'm doing it to raise as much as I can for Cancer Council's life-saving cancer research, prevention programs and support services. Every dollar puts us a dollar closer to the breakthroughs needed so we can tell cancer where to go.
So please donate - and help me pay a fitting tribute to my Dad.
