I'm taking on Cancer Council's The March Charge
I will be running/ walking 100 km as my goal to raise funds for world-class cancer research, prevention programs, and support services, that helped my mum beat her cancer.
Mid-July last year on my Mum's 50th birthday we got the news she had stage 4 Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma. It was suddenly all very real as Mum and I had bad feelings it would be cancerous a week before we found out.
She had been dealing with a resting heart rate of 120 bpm and a nasty rash spreading all over her for months, that didn't go away when the doctors just said it was eczema. However, it wasn't until it spread to her neck revealing a big lump, we realized something was wrong.
She was immediately rushed to Perth where they conducted blood tests and scans. The doctors eventually showed us her scans explaining why her heart rate was so high, Mum had a tumor the same size as her heart squeezing on an artery causing the high blood pressure. They also found tumors in her neck, armpit, chest cavity, and groin.
My Mum and Brenden had to cancel their upcoming cruise as now chemotherapy was needed. Mum had a total of 6 cycles of chemo which was luckier than the 8 they first predicted. Every three weeks she would sit in the hematology ward for 4 hours getting pumped with poison. Until she finally got the news, she was in remission on her 4th chemo!!!!!
At this recent Christmas time, she went through a stem cell transplant. Mum describes it as the hardest thing she has ever done in her life, 6 days of consecutive chemo with the last days of chemo leaving ulcers in her mouth.
She is the strongest person I know, destroying cancer. I have never been so proud of someone as she is the most special person I know.
Mum wanted me to add how much of a support system the Cancer Council hub was in Albany as they offered huge support for her, offering advice from the cancer nurses, counselling and complimentary services from the Wellbeing Center. Shes so grateful she found such a wonderful support system during her difficult time.
Thanks to fundraisers and donations like the March Charge, cancer scientists have nailed Lymphoma. Ultimately curing my mum of cancer. Every dollar raised will help support the Cancer Council’s life-saving cancer research, prevention programs, and support services.
